Perihelion: the closest an object is to the sun. The point which begins the journey, the fall into darkness towards the greatest depth.
Perihelion is an 82 page graphic novel written by Sean Berry and illustrated by Djo Fortunato. It is a surreal and allegorical mythic journey to the underworld - a distorted Hero's Journey, weaving together familiar mythological elements as a collage, circumventing reader expectations.
The story begins with two unnamed characters, a man and a woman, as they commute once again to their jobs deep within a subterranean nightmare world. While initially executing their mutual escape plan with success, the woman is killed - but the man gets away. He vows to find a way into the underworld so he can be with her. What follows is a parallel journey through the underworld: one path followed by a man who cannot move on; the other path by a woman who must escape a different kind of enslavement entirely. One leads to oblivion, the other leads to redemption.
